10 Common Mistakes When Renovating (or Remodeling) Your Kitchen: and how to avoid them
A kitchen remodel or renovation is a pricy investment in your house. However, it's one that, if done properly, can raise your resale value and add years to the look of your home. Most people will typically start with their kitchen when taking on a home renovation because it tends to be the most used room in a house. That being said, there are some mistakes to avoid when taking on this project - and we're here to help you! Keep reading for 10 Common Mistakes when Renovating (or Remodeling) Your Kitchen - and how to avoid them!
We all like to think we're the next Joanna Gains, Martha Stewart, or The Property Brothers, but let me tell you, this is a mistake a lot of homeowners make. Even if you're handy with DIY projects, it's always smart to call in an expert who can help you fine-tune details and give you advice. Doing this will save you time and money and your future self will thank you.
Storage Details Matter!
Don't make the mistake of skipping storage features. Little details like cabinet expansions, or drawer dividers will add so much to the efficiency of your kitchen and will actually save you money (they're more expensive to add later!)
Go With the Flow
Everyone has their own workflow while in the kitchen, so keep that in mind when you're remodeling. The busiest areas of a kitchen are the sink, refrigerator, and stove - these need to be placed in areas that will be the most efficient for you. We like to refer to this as the "work triangle".
Don't Skimp on Counterspace
This is huge if you're looking to add resale value. Potential home buyers want a kitchen with as much counter space as possible - the last thing you want is for your kitchen to look crowded with a bunch of stuff.
Keep Your Budget
If you've read any of our blogs, you'll know what's coming next -- Keep a Budget! This is a mistake that a lot of people make. It's so easy to "go over just a little" but then you end up being $10,000 over, wondering how you got there and eating Top Ramen for dinner every night. Do yourself a favor and make a budget you know that you can stick to. This is another reason why it's good to call in a professional. We can guide you on where to use the budget so that you maximize your money.
Don't Choose Your Appliances Last
This is easy to put on the back burner, but trust me when I say, this is a huge mistake. It's going to be much easier to choose cabinets and countertops to fit your appliances rather than the other way around.
Get a Backsplash
This is commonly overlooked, but it's so important to have a backsplash in your kitchen. It's one of the man focal points, so make it count! Play around with color and texture (but keep in mind your goal: is this a forever home? Great! Go for the bright red you love! If you're looking to resell it in the near future, it might be wise to choose something more neutral like marble or subway tiles)
Remember to Utilize all Storage Space
Take advantage of unused areas (especially if you're working with a smaller kitchen). Talk with your designer to figure out how you can maximize your kitchens floor plan to get the most out of the space you're working with.
Think Outside the Box!
When doing a remodel, you can literally create almost anything you want an customize it to fit your needs perfectly. Think of ways you can rework different pieces into something functional; for you!
The Big Picture
It's so easy to get caught up in a remodel and forget the big picture. Soon enough, you'll end up with 5 different design elements thrown together in your space (not the best idea). Keep a vision board and, again, talk to your designer and contractor to keep you on track for that big-picture plan.
