15 Hacks to Maximize Space in a Small Home
Whether you live in a tiny house, or your normal sized house is actually just tiny, it can be hard to maximize space and create a functional living environment. If you've been looking for some space-saving tips and tricks, look no further! We're breaking down our top hacks to make sure that you are set up for success.
1| Keep your Windows High
Windows and walls directly influence an interior space. If you add enough light into a space, it can really bring it back to life and make it profoundly larger than it actually is.
2| Floor to Ceiling Bookshelves
Whether you're dealing with a small apartment, tiny house, or small home, floor to ceiling bookshelves will be a lifesaver for you! They'll add a cool focal point to whatever room you put them in and you can use them as extra storage as needed.
3| Adding a Loft
If you're able, you should consider adding a loft space above the living room. Doing this will effectively maximize your space by giving you not only an extra room, but it's a more dynamic way of spicing up an otherwise forgotten space.
4| Utilize Space Under the Stairs
More often than not, stairs always have unused space under them. You can covert it into a reading nook or extra closet and save a lot of space!
5| Add Mirrors!
Mirrors are the quickest way to brighten up any space and make a small room feel larger than it actually is! You don't have to go out and buy the most expensive mirrors out there, but adding a few will really give your current space a face-lift.
Adding plants into your space is another quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive way to take a room from drab to fab! Plus, they add aesthetic and bring some life into your home.
7| Open Shelving
This tip might be my personal favorite because open shelving is 1, really popular right now, and 2, it allows you to get intentionally organized and declutter your space. Trust me when I say that one of the #1 things people typically overlook when trying to maximize space is clutter.
8| Bigger Rooms, Smaller Furniture
If you're really serious about maximizing space, then head over to your local IKEA or visit them online. They have a wide variety of space saving furniture that's still really stylish and functional. If you have a large room and pair it with small furniture, you'll give the appearance of a much bigger space - plus your room wont look cluttered!
Including color into a smaller space wont help you to save space, but it will give you a focal point and you can base your design around that color pallet.
10| Get Rid of Your Huge Dinning Room Table
There are about a million options for dinning room tables out there. If you're already working with a small space, try getting a breakfast bar, or breakfast nook that will fit snugly in the corner of your space. Doing this will really help your kitchen to look more open and less cluttered.
11| Open Closet
This is kind of a weird one, but go with me, ok? Big closets take up a lot of space, but by adding a rack for your hangers and some simple wicker baskets, you'll create an organized and decluttered environment for your clothes to live.
12| Room Dividers
This one is especially ideal for studio apartments. Room dividers are a great way to help you divide and conquer your space and give some separation between rooms. I like this one because it's totally customizable to you and your specific needs.
13| Replace Your Doors with Sliding Doors
Opening a door takes up space so replacing them with sliding doors will really help you to create an open space with the option of having privacy.
14| Retractable Bed
If you're able to, we suggest getting a retractable bed. This will save you a lot of space and will help to maximize the remaining space you have left.
15| Claim the Space Around Your Windows
To truly get the most of your small space, you should take advantage of the open space around your windows. You can add shelving for extra storage, build a reading nook, or even add a window seat with extra storage built in.
